How Does Outpatient Alcohol Treatment Work?

outpatient alcohol treatment

Outpatient alcohol and addiction programs usually take on 3 steps of assessment, treatment and aftercare. Lengths and intensity of programs can vary depending on the patient’s needs. Here’s what you can expect from outpatient treatment:

Step 1: Assessment

Start with an initial biopsychosocial assessment with one of our trained and compassionate counselors. Assessments require a combination of medical history, physical exam, and drug testing. Through the assessment, staff will be able to gather information needed to place you in the best treatment available.

Step 2: Therapy + Treatment

1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

A goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Elements of cognitive restructuring and behavior modification are used with the goal of exploring the relationship between one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

2. Solution Focused Counseling

A person-centered approach that seeks to engage individuals, increase internal motivation and bring about behavioral change. Treatment options are discussed openly, individuals are asked to contribute their own ideas and solutions regarding their care.

3. Meditation & Guided Imagery

Art therapy is offered as a form of psychotherapy incorporating creative self-expression for those who might find it difficult to verbalize their thoughts and feelings.

4. Didactic Group Therapy

A form of group therapy that may be less interactive than your standard and may not involve direct attention to each individual’s goals. It includes topical lectures, educational videos or other one-way presentations and large group discussions.

5. Family Therapy

Family therapy is a  form of psychotherapy that addresses the addiction in the context of the entire family and works to restore the health of both the individual, as well as those closest to them. We encourage our patients to invite their family members who are supportive of their recovery to attend Family Support Group.

Step 3: Aftercare

Aftercare is critical for a successful return to the community in which you live and is one of the most valuable assets of treatment. Aftercare is tailored to the needs of each individual while still gaining awareness of potential problems they could face early in recovery.
